Saddle up for a GOOD BRUSHING!

Taking care of your TEETH!
As 1st grade students it is very important to brush your teeth twice a day for a total of 3 to 4 minutes each time. A circular motion on a few teeth at a time helps fight the bacteria and germs that build up on teeth called plaque. The plaque build up might not be noticeable but becomes sticky and becomes a magnet for bacteria and sugar that can eventually rot your teeth. The activities below help you understand how important brushing your teeth is and how flossing can help fight plaque. Another helpful activity teaches you the proper way to brush your teeth. Enjoy your activities and remember the next time you say CHEESE, how important it is to brush your teeth!

The importance of brushing
This activity is designed to help students realize that plaque can build up over night when they don’t brush their teeth good enough. This activity takes two days. The first day the students will cut out lips and teeth and create a mouth. The next day the white teeth will be filled in yellow by the teacher the night before resembling the plaque. The students then need to brush their teeth with white paint to get all the plaque off. This exercise is a creative way to show the plaque build up and how important brushing is.

Eggcarton Flossing
This activity will help students learn how to floss their teeth by using egg cartons. The student will cut the egg cartoons to look like teeth and then will take a piece of floss and floss between the egg carton teeth.

How to Brush
This activity explains and allows students to practice the correct way of brushing their teeth. HAPPY BRUSHING!!!

Adapting to CHANGE and exploring your senses!

Exploring YOUR FIVE SENSES

My goal is to help parents and educators understand their student during their behavior changes, changes in attitude and while they learn to adapt with their body changes and nutrition. The more the parent and the educator understand the more they can guide and assist their child/student. I will be using TEKS 115.3 Health Education, Grade 1 to help explain to parents, educators and students on how to adapt to behavior changes and attitudes that will help lead them into healthy adult. It will teach them how to adapt and recognize social behaviors, body changes, set goals and achieve goals. It will make the students aware of decisions made early on and explain how they can affect them later on down the road. It will also help them become more aware and cautious of safe and unsafe things that may enter his or hers life as a student.
In addition to adapting to these changes our senses begin to change as well. As a first grader its exciting to see how children/students learn how their five senses become such a key factor in our everyday life. It's important each student can identify the five senses correctly and by doing so I've included some activities that will allow the student and parent to part take in. Enjoy as you discover how to use the five senses!

Your Five Senses has two creative activities that will help guide students to understand and learn about the five senses. The student will participate on page 3 and 4 using different senses for the two exercises.
The first exercise "Making Sense" the student will cut out pictures that explain the word and then draw a line from the word to its opposite meaning of the word.
The second exercise "Test Yourself" teaches the student to use their sense of touch to determine how the object feels that is listed in the box. Once the student has determined how it feels they will check the box depending on how they thought it felt.

Using your five senses to investigate a sunflower is another great activity to help a student identify their five senses. For this exercise you will need a sunflower and will follow the instructions and questions on the activity.

Another fun exercise is Walking around the school using your five senses. This will help students identify senses they have not acknowledged in the past and will help them be more cautious of their every day surroundings.

Welcome Message

Welcome Parents and Students to Health Education for 1st graders. This is such an exciting time for students because they are developing social skills and making life long friends but it's also a challenging time as they adapt to their behavioral changes and body changes. Health Education discusses the behaviors of students and how behaviors can affect their health in a positive and negative way. Their bodies begin to change, moods start to develop and it's beneficial as educators and parents to teach our students to adapt and make smart choices regarding nutrition, rest and exercise to promote positive behaviors. So welcome to Health Education for 1st grade.
